About the release

„R'lyeh” is an album composed and recorded in its entirety during the closing years of the 1990s. It was originally intended to inaugurate Smrtan's alternative musical incarnation, Smrtan's Shoggoth – a project firmly rooted in the universe of H. P. Lovecraft. Once completed and mastered, the album remained hidden in the archives for more than two decades, becoming one of those recordings destined to wait years before finally seeing the light of day. Musically, R'lyeh defies straightforward classification. Its sound drifts between what has often been described as death ambient and ritual ambient, drawing profound inspiration from – indeed existing firmly within – the literary world of H. P. Lovecraft, as the project's very name quietly suggests.
